Windows 7 & Quake2

I had a viscous virus, win32:filas I think it was. So, I did a fresh install of Windows7. I had been using XP for years. Quake2 seems to work fine in Windows7 EXCEPT that my Autoexec.cfg won't load. I play WodX mostly, but the Autoexec won't load in any mod, not even in single player. Any ideas??

hi Martuni,
I have a buddy here locally that just went to Win 7. Quake 2 works fine except he can't join the online servers. He connects fine from PC to PC in his house. One way around this is to run both Win 7 and XP Pro. There are many blogs online talking about Q2 on Win 7 issues.

hi Garf.
That's strange that your bud can't get on a server. I have no problem connecting, but no config. I'm a total noob, no hook and low resolution...talk about The Horror. Well, I'll go surf the internet some more. Thanks for the reply. C-ya!

I'd move or rename the current config.cfg & autoexec.cfg files in both Quake2/baseq2 and Quake2/weapons folders. Then I'd go into single player mode and change video settings and set my binds in order to let Quake2 regenerate the config.cfg from scratch. Next I'd create a fresh autoexec.cfg will all my custom binds in the weapons folder and make sure there aren't any illigal characters or missing quotation marks.
I'd also get the latest r1q2 and run that instead of the current exe:
http://www.r1ch.net/stuff/r1q2/download/r1q2.zip
If that fails you can right-click on r1q2.exe and in the Properties window, click on the Compatibility Tab. Check the "Run this program in compatibility mode for" (checkbox) and try running in different modes. Maybe Windows7 doesn't like Quake2

This is really frustrating. It seems like some elements of my config ARE working. For instance, I noticed that water looks very clear because I have gl_polyblend turned off. I also have particles turned off and I see no particles. I got a real head scratcher going here. Maybe you're right and Window 7 doesn't like Q2.
Windows 7 seems pretty sweet, so far.
